An ongoing question in search engine optimization (SEO) projects regards which directories might be useful for increasing incoming traffic to a web site and as a means in obtaining better search engine visibility. The question arises due to the importance that was once attributed by search engines to some directories and by the desire to attract direct traffic to a site, where and whenever possible.
For a new site, directories, short reviews of sites organized by categories and subcategories, can be a useful source of incoming links.
However, it is highly doubtful that most directories today help very much in improving search engine visibility, nor in generating much direct traffic.
There are multiple reasons:
- directories are often “generalist” – yet it is thematic links which are most useful for most sites that deal with products, services or in specific sectors;
- intentionally or not, many directories are not always well indexed in search engines, thus not visible themselves in search engines;
- outbound links from directories are often not easily digestible by search engines;
- between link bounces, which aim to count the outbound traffic, and techniques of the type nofollow, there are relatively few directories that facilitate the visibility of a site in search engines;
- the high cost of editing site submissions by hand implies that there are really very few quality directories.
How to choose a directory of some value
For all sites, whether they be generalist or specialized in a vertical market, there are some parameters that can be used to gain an idea of the quality of a directory, both for its direct traffic potential as well as in potentially helping a site’s search engine ranking. It’s worth noting right away that there is no precise formula to use and that what is true today may not be valid tomorrow. That out of the way, let me share with you some of parameters that we take into account and why we consider them.
How many directory pages are indexed in Google and other search engines?
If a directory is not in Google’s index, it is unlikely that people will find that directory. If there isn’t much traffic to the directory, there won’t be a lot of direct traffic from the directory to our site. In addition, if the pages of a directory are not well-indexed, there is probably something wrong somewhere; the presence of a site in the directory will not facilitate visibility in Google and other search engines. In many search engines, you can check how many pages are indexed by searching for site:domain, for example site:www.antezeta.com.
How old is the directory?
As in the off-line world, it is likely that a site that has resisted the test of time, has survived because of the actual value it offers. In some cases however, an old directory is no longer updated. It’s just that nobody has the courage to turn it off. To get an idea of how old a domain is, you can check the registration date of the domain (from the so-called whois record). If this is not available, check when the Internet research firm Netcraft first noticed the domain. Keep in mind that a domain could change its purpose over time – nothing says that the domain has continually hosted a directory.
Is the directory original?
It may seem like a strange question, but many directories use free data available from the open directory (DMOZ) to feed their directory. The result is that their directory is mostly a copy of the better known Open Directory. Search engines tend to prefer original sources on the web, giving little consideration to copies. Google’s directory is such a copy itself, albeit Google provides added value by allowing the sorting of sites by PageRank in an attempt to provide relevance alphabetical order cannot offer.
Alexa Rank and Google PageRank as indicators of quality
In the search for an unequivocal rating on the value of a web site, almost all fall into the temptation to give too much importance to the “votes” awarded by Alexa and Google.
Alexa Rank
Alexa ranks sites it knows in ascending order; the lower the value, the better. The problem with Alexa is in the data survey and sampling method. Historically traffic to a site was counted only for those persons who installed the Alexa browser toolbar, either directly or by someone on their behalf. This self-selected population does not represent a reliable statistical sample. In April 2008 Alexa announced a change to its system:
We now aggregate data from multiple sources to give you a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users.1
Unfortunately, we don’t know anything about the sources of the data nor about the methodology used by Alexa. The only reasonable conclusion that can be drawn is that Alexa data is not reliable.
Google PageRank
Google’s PageRank suffers from other problems. PageRank is none other than an overall score on a logarithmic scale of 0 to 10 (going from 0 to 1 is simple, from 9 to 10 s very hard), assigned by Google to each of a site’s indexed pages. It is visible in Google’s toolbar, in the Google Directory and, for one’s own web site, in the Google Webmaster Tools dashboard. A site’s home page usually shows the highest value, although this is not always the case.
The main problem lies in the fact that the PageRank visible to the public is not the same one used internally by Google. The Page Rank visible in the toolbar is updated only every 3-4 months. For several reasons, it is safe to assume that public PageRank only rarely coincides with a real Page Rank used by Google. In any case, PageRank is just one of many factors used by Google in judging the importance of a web page.
Spam or respect for data privacy: why is a directory maintained?
Before submitting a site to a directory, it is worth asking why a company is maintaining the directory.
In the case of the historic directory Yahoo!, the directory was the service at the heart of the company.
Yet it isn’t difficult to imagine that some directories today serve mainly as an excuse to collect sensitive data from a company. If the directory company or its servers are outside Europe, there is a risk that the data will be improperly used. Be aware of site submission forms. Are many required data items not strictly necessary to review the site and add it to the directory?
Focus on specialized or generalist directories?
For a site that deals with products or services in a specific sector, undoubtedly it is worth seeking out directories aimed at that sector, namely the so-called vertical directories.
Reciprocal links
Some directories ask for, or even require, a link back for inclusion in their directory. The reason is that they want the visibility their directory provides to be reciprocated. While this is understandable, there are times in life when sharing is not fundamental. This could be one of those moments.
Directories requiring a fee
Many serious directories require a payment for the evaluation of a site submission, without guaranteeing the site’s inclusion. The reason is simple: personnel needed to ensure the directory quality cost money. Even the work required to reject site submissions involves a cost. On a positive note, the directories that have two barriers to enter (cost and review) potentially offer a better showcase for those sites that do manage to get listed.
How to apply for inclusion in a directory
- Register, if possible. Registration may help in the process of communication between the directory editors and the website administrator who submits a site. The username and password allow, in some cases, changes to be made directly to the entry at a later date. But beware: if the registration asks for too much data irrelevant to a site’s inclusion, the directory may have ulterior motives, as was noted earlier in this article.
- Navigate to the most relevant category and subcategory. A search for competitors can often help in uncovering the most appropriate category.
- Look for a link such as submit a site.
- Fill out as best you can the site submission form. Pay particular attention to the title and summary of the site submission. The more these elements are credible and appealing, the more effective the site’s presence in the directory will be.
Consider preparing the submission entry before filling in the form and keep a record of it in a spreadsheet. Various spreadsheets (OpenOffice.org Calc, Microsoft Excel) allow the counting of the number of characters of text through a length function, LEN. This feature is very useful when a directory requires a title or summary within a certain maximum length. In addition, there are sometimes problems with session expiration or other errors when taking “too long” to submit a form. Cutting and pasting submission data avoids this problem. Finally, keep track of the date of the submission, and check back later to see if it was accepted.
Two historical directories in the spotlight
There are two directories that deserve special consideration for their historical importance.
The Yahoo! directory is dead, RIP.
For years the Yahoo! directory was front and center on the web. But slowly the focus shifted to the power offered by search engine algorithms, arriving at a directory dead in fact even in the absence of an official statement. In some European countries, such as Germany, Yahoo! has said openly that the directory is no longer maintained:
Ein Eintrag in das deutschsprachige Yahoo! Verzeichnis ist nicht mehr möglich. Dieser Service wurde eingestellt (Submission of a site in the German-speaking Yahoo! directory is no longer possible. This service has been terminated) 2
In Italy, we requested an official statement. Should one become available, we will cover it here. But the picture in Italy appears to be similar to Germany.
Our advice: submit your site to Yahoo! in Italy and other countries where still possible, you never know. But do not waste time in monitoring the success or otherwise of submission.

Netscape / Open Directory (Dmoz)
Dmoz (Directory Mozilla), The Open Directory, was born as Gnuhoo in 1998 through the initiative of engineers at Sun Microsystems as a response to the success of Yahoo!, then primarily a directory of manually reviewed sites. Shortly thereafter, the directory became part of Netscape, now AOL. Dmoz is supported by volunteer editors who verify and approve submitted sites.
As an “open” project, everyone can download the open directory database for further analysis or to republish on their website.
The quality is very variable. Some of the volunteer editors assigned to categories and subcategories are very committed. But many categories go without being updated for a long time. Then there is the Google factor. At one point a site’s presence in the Open Directory contributed significantly to visibility in Google. That importance has influenced the behavior of some editors even today. It no longer seems that Google gives much weight to a site’s presence in the Open Directory.

To help you in the search for directories that best fit your business needs, we offer a list of the major directories present in the Italian market. In this space we won’t offer a specific judgment on these directories – though this service is available to our clients. After you have read this article, you’ll probably already be able to note that some of these directories are very interesting while others are to be avoided.
