Our site got exploited recently not specifically because of WP but your blog post sure helps. We are currently awaiting to hear back from Google for re-inclusion.

Hi Sean
I'm new to wordpress and have stopped work on my site in order to add a few security measures.

Long passwords with lots of characters, not just numbers and letters.

Plugins that only let you try and log in so many times... and then lock you out.

And some sort of firewall plugin.

I'm not being specific but you get the idea.

Pity we have to spend so much time on security instead of just getting on with what we want to do.
C'est la vie

Thanks, great tips....
I updated my site and changed as much as I could that might not be liked by the spiders and I have now filed for re inclusion. I hope it has not been breached like the other site you mentioned, so I will take your advice on as many points as possible...

Great list, but now I'm paranoid :)

Non tech users should start using decent passwords, along with changing the user name. Use letters, numbers and symbol combinations.

I’d just go ahead and delete that line or at least the bloginfo(’version’). If you’re running an older version of WordPress, anyone can view source to see what attacks might work against your blog.

Thanks for the tips. I received a penalty for reasons unknown last week. So I have been frantically trying to find out what the problem is. As it stands I can't and my traffic from google is now nearly non existent. I updated my site and changed as much as I could that might not be liked by the spiders and I have now filed for re inclusion. I hope it has not been breached like the other site you mentioned, so I will take your advice on as many points as possible.

Good list Sean - many good ideas here (esp. changing the default name for the admin account).

Re: Getting on Google's Safe Browsing Blacklist. We released a free tool which will give you email and RSS alerts if your site appears here. Better to tie down your copy of WP but if you have been compromised then early notification is helpful.

Hope you like, any feedback is appreciated.

#3, 4 and 5 are quite effective, IMHO. And #3 even the non IT savvy blogger can do.

#5 might look like overkill, but it is not, definitely not. I have seen other systems hacked because of brute force attacks on application internal database tables, which could have had no password if the user clicked "Next" too quickly during the installation.

Implementing the tips listed here will go a long way in protecting your blog.

Hi Sean.

This really is a list of very interesting tips - some of which I have already implemented, although I'll be using your check list as a reference point for the future.

Great work!

Now all I have to do is to learn how to set up effective .htaccess files!

All the best,

Alex

Thanks, great tips.
I didn't think about suppressing php error messages (item 9 ), which I think is a very good idea.
